More than 1,000 PhDs compile new textbooks

Of the 1,574 authors participating in the compilation of new textbooks, about 70% have a doctorate degree or higher.

The above information is mentioned in the report of the General Education Textbook Conference, published by the Ministry of Education and Training on the evening of September 28. Currently, 6 grades are using new textbooks: 1, 2, 3 (elementary), 6, 7 (middle school) and 10 (high school). 1,574 authors participated in the compilation, of which 384 compiled 10th grade textbooks; 318 compiled grade 7 books; The remaining classes are around 200 people. The authors all meet the prescribed standards, about 70% have a doctorate degree or higher.

The Ministry of Education and Training assessed that the policy of socialization of textbooks has mobilized a large number of teachers, scientists and education experts to participate in the compilation process. Six publishers participated in compiling and publishing textbooks, including Vietnam Education Publishing House, University of Education, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Vinh University, and Hue University. . In addition, three other joint stock companies organized the compilation.

The textbook compilation process goes through five steps. First, the editorial unit selects the author. The next step is to compile the book (including design and illustration) and complete at least one lesson to organize experimental teaching and learn from experience. This activity needs the participation of all authors, then continue to compile other lessons, get opinions from teachers, education administrators, scientists to evaluate textbook templates. . The final step is to complete the sample book and send it to the Ministry of Education and Training for evaluation.

At least 15 days before the first meeting of the National Evaluation Council, the textbook sample shall be sent to the members of the Council for research, comment and rating. The authors are given explanations about the book, sharing their views when compiling so that the Council can understand the ideas of each template.

According to the evaluation of the Ministry of Education and Training, the book series has its own creations in terms of presentation and content expression for the same requirements to be met. Different books choose different materials, images, teaching methods and assessment, to meet the needs of different localities with different economic, social and cultural characteristics.

However, some contents and terms used in the textbook templates do not guarantee the connection between subjects/educational activities. The progress of lesson content in a subject also has significant differences between different books. Some templates have errors in content, spelling, language, images…

In addition, the review and appraisal of some documents and materials included in the textbooks have not fully paid attention to the social impact aspects; cause confusion among the public.

Vietnam started implementing a new general education program (2018 program) from the 2020-2021 school year with grade 1. In the 2021-2022 school year, the new program is applied to grades 2 and 6 and this year is with grade 3, grade 7 and grade 10.

According to Circular 25 in 2020 of the Ministry of Education and Training, the authority to select textbooks belongs to the People’s Committee of the province. This regulation applies from the school year 2021-2022. The Department of Education and Training must notify the approved list of books at least 5 months before the new school year, ie April every year.
