Male student to Olympia final thanks to goal setting since 7th grade

Set a goal to attend the Road to Olympia program from the end of 7th grade, four years later, Vu Nguyen Son (Hanoi) won a ticket to the final of the year.

On the afternoon of September 25, Vu Nguyen Son, 12th grade Russian, from Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, and his family watched the fourth quarter match, the program Road to Olympia, in which he was one of four contestants. Despite going through the live recording, when watching the match with a close chase, having to decide the victory or defeat by side questions, Nguyen Son still had many emotions and was happy when he was named as a contestant. won the last ticket to the final of the year, taking place on October 2.

Nguyen Son started watching the show Road to Olympia since he was an elementary school student, then joined the community to review Olympia in grade 7. According to the program rules in 2022, each high school can only introduce one student. , candidates must be good students in grade 10 and first term in grade 11, good conduct. Therefore, Son must pass the school-level qualifying exam including knowledge test and interview.

Judging “you are all very good”, Nguyen Son did not expect too much. However, his confidence and strength of knowledge in many fields helped the guy born in 2005 surpass many classmates, becoming the only Ams student to attend Olympia 2022.

Son applied in April 2022 when the program was two-thirds of the way through. Seeing that the students received invitations to participate in the weekly round, the male student was impatient when he did not see his name. It was not until the last recording session that Son was called. “I was relieved, my whole body was light,” Son recalled the feeling of receiving the program’s invitation.

Without setting long-term goals, Nguyen Son determines that every match is important, so he always tries his best. Through weekly, monthly and quarterly contests, she was impressed with her outstanding social and foreign language knowledge. Overcoming obstacles – a contest in which not many candidates give the correct answer with only one clue, but Nguyen Son twice won the highest level of 80 points, creating a big gap with his friends.

The male student said that he had carefully studied the rules of the game and found that the Obstacle round only had a turning point when a contestant answered the correct keyword after 1-2 suggestions, winning 80 or 60 points. As for the correct answer when 3-4 hints are opened, the score level is 40 and 20. Therefore, when there are some inferences in his mind, Son often chooses to ring the answer bell, in order to create a score advantage with remaining candidates. “If I get it wrong, I can fix it in the Acceleration round,” Son said.

For Son, the most memorable moment in the journey at the Road to Olympia was when he won the side question in the fourth quarter competition. After the question of which city the 500kV power line goes through, Quoc Khanh – Son’s competitor for the final ticket, rang the bell to answer immediately but the answer was incorrect. For a few seconds, Nguyen Son considered and thought that the 500kV power line running from Hoa Binh, if going through Hanoi, would have to run across, which is unreasonable, so he only gave the answer “Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City”. “I answered without being really sure, mainly based on inference,” Son said.

When it was announced that the live teleconference in the final match will be located at Hanoi – Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, Nguyen Son broke down and ran down to the audience area to share the joy. “Even now, when I remember that moment, I’m still very happy,” Son said.

Ms. Bui Thi Hoai Thanh, Literature teacher and homeroom of Nguyen Son, compares her to a volcano. Outwardly, Son is calm, restrained and rarely expresses his attitude, but hidden inside is a strong personality, fierce and ready to explode to shine. Ms. Thanh knows Olympia is Nguyen Son’s dream for a long time, so this playground means a lot to the student.

In class, Son studies regularly, has strengths in social subjects and general understanding. Ms. Thanh evaluates her students as proactive, independent, and conscious. Son can arrange personal plans in a scientific way, always has a sense of learning and progress. Ms. Thanh hopes that the student will explode at the right time and achieve good results in the final.

Nguyen Son’s three friends in the final match on October 2 were Dang Le Nguyen Vu (Bac Duyen Ha High School, Thai Binh),  Vu Bui Dinh Tung (Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students, Hai Phong) and Bui Anh Duc(Specialized High School in Paintball). La). Son said that Nguyen Vu has the strength of speed in manipulating and processing information; Dinh Tung has a wide understanding, often breaking through in the section on the finish line; and Anh Duc is a factor capable of creating surprises and mutations.

Due to the lack of time, Son said that he mainly practice skills, read books and newspapers to know more current news. Male students also receive support from friends and teachers, helping them synthesize knowledge and suggest good questions. Besides, Son focused on improving speed, because the opponents in the final match were very formidable.

Among the contestants who participated in Olympia, Nguyen Son was impressed and learned the style of senior  Nguyen Hoang Khanh  (former student of Bach Dang High School, Quang Ninh) – the champion of the 21st year. Son admired his coolness and intelligence. Good memory and understanding of Hoang Khanh’s strange, less common knowledge. The male student thinks that these are the qualities he needs to learn and improve.

Participating in the Road to Olympia competition, Nguyen Son said that in addition to knowledge, he also improved his social skills and made many friends. “During the match, we are rivals but still friends in life. Olympia also gives me the opportunity to get to know and meet people with similar interests and passions, even though we are far apart.” , the male student shared.
